Courtyard House

This u-shaped house was designed to maximize natural light in the interior while providing 100% privacy for the first floor without window coverings. An easement alley coupled with a zero-foot building setback on the rear of the property allowed the space normally set aside for a back yard to be moved to the middle of the house in the form of a courtyard. This arrangement perfectly suited the client’s privacy requirements while simultaneously allowing for an abundance of glass. Large windows in the bedrooms all faced north while windows in the public spaces faced east providing afternoon shade at the time in which family activities were most prevalent.
